The KJ Technique

Today we'll talk about another way of gathering information: The KJ Technique. This method will allow a group of people to quickly reach a consensus on organizing information. For our purposes, we will be focusing on website content, however you could use this technique for any number of situations.

Let's all have a look at how the folks at User Interface Engineering describe the KJ Technique:

Now that you have a better understanding of what the KJ method is, let's try one in class! Remember asking your friends and co-workers all those questions about IMDB.com? Now it's time to see what YOU think! The room is about to get very colorful!

Once we have grouped and named our categories, I want you to take an inventory of every group. Write down each category, outline-style. This way, you'll have a quick-reference guide to what exactly your website design should include.

Next, we'll start WIREFRAMING!

Homework due 1/25/10

1- Read the Site Development Process section of the Web Style Guide online. There will be a QUIZ on this content on Monday, January 25th in class.

2- Talk to THREE (or more, if you want to) people who know what iMDB.com is and ask them the questions I handed you in class. Write down their answers and bring them with you to class on the 25th. Do NOT ask other classmates. You can ask friends, coworkers, parents, etc., as long as they are familar with iMDB. We will talk about these in class, and use their answers to start reorganizing the iMDB website.
